Grade II Listed townhall erected over a market house, now library, exhibition hall and meeting room. The cupola originally had 2 bells dated 1807 and 1699. The bell from cupola in the entrance is inscribed 'W. Prideaux Mayor, 1699'. In 1806 financed by John, 6th Duke of Bedford the post-medieval market house (shown on a 1753 town map) was give a second floor to allow it to be used as a town hall, an act of patronage to the town. The town was granted a weekly friday market in 1260. In 1906, the building was still used for the Petty Sessions, County Court and the Education Committee. The stained glass "Venetian" window carries the old borough's arms and was a gift to the town from T E Wakefield in 1933.
