The houses on the west side of the road are situated at the bottom of a hill and have terraced gardens. The road is first shown on the 1920 OS map, then called Wellesley Road. Apart from an entrance lodge at its southern end by the junction with Telegraph Lane East, houses had as yet to be built along it, with the first appearing on the 1938 map.
