Wolterton was a thriving village until Wolterton Hall was built and the estate established. The village was full of unwanted peasants who were in the way and spoiled the view so it was razed to the ground and the church along with it. The tower was retained as a folly by the 1st Lord Walpole of Wolterton. The hall was completed in 1742.
