Thomas Telford was the son of an Eskdale shepherd and became a leading civil engineer responsible for many important roads, bridges, canals and docks in the late 18th and early 19th century. He began as an apprentice stonemason in Langholm - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Telford.
