The railway between Chislehurst and Tonbridge was opened by the South Eastern Railway on 2nd March 1868. This shortened its route from London to Dover which previously went via Redhill. From 1994 until 2003 Eurostars ran along this line to and from the Channel Tunnel. At 3,156 metres Sevenoaks Tunnel is the longest rail tunnel in the south of England, outside of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the London Underground. It takes the line under the Greensand Ridge. This footpath between Oakhill Road and Crownfields to the west of the town centre of Sevenoaks passes over the northern entrance to Sevenoaks Tunnel which is at the bottom of the slope beyond the railings on the right hand side.
