I have not seen an explanation of the name of this small car park. It may be connected with 19th century Crystal Palace in London, or possibly with the 'Crystal Palace', a Hastings fishing lugger which sank with the loss of all hands off Plymouth in 1862. The church raised funds for the widows and children. Nearby Warrior Square was developed for housing between the 1850's and the 1870's.
