The Station Armoury was responsible for the secure storage of small arms (weapons and ammunition). The pre-flight loading of aircraft guns would begin here with armourers using special machines to fill ammunition belts. There was a colour coded system in place in order to obtain the correct mix of ammunition e.g. tracer (red), armour piercing (green), incendiaries (blue), and ball (purple). Image
