Hampshire welcomed Nottinghamshire to play the first first-class match at the Newclose ground, near Newport. This was the first County Championship match to be played on the Isle of Wight for 57 years. It proved a happy return for Hampshire, who won the match by 244 runs (Hampshire 310 and 376 for 5 declared, Nottinghamshire 239 and 194). This is a view towards the Pavilion from the Blackwater End of the ground on the sunny second day of the match.
