The village's name does not relate to some great conflict in this historically troublesome 'Borders' area, but derives from the Anglo-Saxon mere-bodl, meaning "the house by the lake" (the lake was drained in the 19th century). https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/yetholm/morebattle/index.html
