Set back slightly from the road, nos 20 & 21 were built in the late 18th century, probably by the Darby family of ironmasters, as cottages for workers at the nearby works. They attracted a Grade II listing https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101206307-20-and-21-darby-road-the-gorge#.XNPPMY5KhPY & https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1206307 in 1974
