Built in the early 19th century by the Darby family, the industrious local ironfounders. It was originally a single house, but has since been divided into two, with one part fronting the road (ie the 3-window range to the left) and the other part around to the side (the single-window range on the right/rear); the whole was Grade II listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101367409-11-and-12-darby-road-the-gorge#.XNPN1o5KhPY & https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1367409 in 1974.
