Many years ago I entertained visitors from the north Netherlands at Easter, and they were astonished by the display of brilliant purple aubretias widely displayed in Penn front gardens. Two strains are visible here; they are part of the cabbage family. Not a lot of people know that ;-) The current fashion these days is to have the front gardens dug out and covered in block paving or some other surface for parking multiple cars. Just a few properties still show the spring colours that used to be commonplace.
