Until the late 19th century anyone wishing to travel east from Rye had to do so via Appledore or via a ferry. A new bridge over the River Rother and road were constructed in 1893 linking the town to the small settlement of east Guldeford and is now the main A259. The Kings Avenue estate on the left was built in the 1930s.
