Flowers stalks come before the leaves. The leaves are massive. In the past the leaves were used to wrap up foodstuffs, such as butter, hence the name, it is closely related to winter heliotrope and the flowers look very similar but heliotrope is out much earlier and the leaves nowhere near the size of Butterbur.
