Squirrel Nest Boxes

Seen in trees, to the right and left of picture. In total, thirty-six boxes were placed in the surrounding woods, in 2014/5, to give red squirrels a safe refuge which could not be accessed by grey squirrels (entrance protected by a metal collar, preventing the larger grey squirrels from gaining access). This was in reaction to a major squirrelpox outbreak in 2014. Whilst squirrels have often investigated the boxes, there have been no recorded occupations. The boxes were placed at the highest possible locations, using a tall ladder, but probably not high enough for the squirrels.
