For many years, Pilkington's was the biggest employer in St Helens. The company was founded in 1826 in St Helens, using the trading name of St Helens Crown Glass Company and, in 1894, the business was incorporated under the Companies Act 1862 as Pilkington Brothers Limited. Pilkington was floated as a public company on the London Stock Exchange in 1970. In 2006, the company was taken over by the Japan-based NSG Group of whom it is now a subsidiary.
