Steam dredger "SND No.4", Gloucester Docks

One of the exhibits of the National Waterways Museum , which is based in Llanthony Warehouse http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6097138 , the building behind it. The dredger was built in Sliedrecht near Rotterdam in 1925 and was operational until 1981. It is steam driven (originally coal, later oil fired). Each of the buckets can hold 350kg of silt. The buckets tip over at the top of the structure, and the silt slides down the chute (visible at the centre of the ship) into a barge moored next to the dredger. During its operational period, SND No.4 has lifted 35-40 thousand tons of mud annually from the canal and docks, dredging to a depth of 16ft (4.9m) along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and Gloucester Docks and 24ft (7.3m) at Sharpness Dock. https://www.gloucesterdocks.me.uk/vessels/nwmdredger.htm
