Peterborough is a city that has always attracted immigrant communities: the Italians in the early 20th Century, the Irish a bit later, Poles after the Second World War, and again when their country joined the EU. Ugandan Asians evicted by Idi Amin, workers from Pakistan, and to a lesser extent India, and in more recent years Iraqi, Afghan and Syrian refugees. One thing any immigrant community craves is familiar food, and one thing that all these waves have included is shopkeepers - either experienced grocers, or people turning their hand to it for the first time. I like these small greengrocers in particular - they have foods you don't find elsewhere, and even the familiar stuff is fresher than that from the big supermarkets.
