The Metropolitan Railway carving at the top of the building reflects the previous history of this station but may be confusing to the stranger! The station is on the route of London's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Line, opened between Paddington and Farringdon in 1863, but is now on the Circle Line, the Hammersmith & City Line and is the northern terminus of the District Line. It should not be confused with the Bakerloo Line station also called Edgware Road about 150 metres away to the north on the other side of the Marylebone flyover.
