Opened in 1839 by the Brandling Junction Railway, later part of the North Eastern Railway, on the line from Gateshead to South Shields and Sunderland. This station, in the immediate foreground, closed in 1896. View west towards Gateshead. The 1839 building can be seen to the right of the track. In 1896, the line was quadrupled and the station moved to the position of the current Metro station in the middle distance.
