The horse is standing on the line of the former Mow Cop Tramway, an unusual mineral railway that took coal from two collieries on the east (Biddulph) side of Mow Cop, up the hill and through a 380 yard long tramway tunnel, constructed in 1832, then down an inclined plane to a wharf on the Macclesfield Canal the other side.
