The sign seen in Image The small number top right, "6173", is a reference number The "127" in the upper half of the H denotes the pipe fitting diameter, in this case an old 5 inch thread The "2.9" in the lower half of the H denotes the distance to the actual hydrant, 2.9 metres, probably 9.5 feet in old money.
