This shot shows why the Maybole by-pass will come so far north of the town. Smithston Bridge has caused traffic problems for many years. The height limit of 16'6" in the central part of the arch means that big vehicles have to stray into the middle of the road at a sharp bend with no clear view ahead in either direction.
