Stone post (plate lost) by the A1023 (was A12), in parish of BRENTWOOD (BRENTWOOD District), Chelmsford Road, Shenfield, opposite No. 179, by the road, on North side of road. Erected by the Essex Second District turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- Top face: LONDON / XX : North face: XX MILES FROM London : Original plate would also have read:- : (Chelmsford 9) : : (Brentwood 2) : Carved bench mark on West face.
