Known as 'The Monty' the canal ran from the Franklin Junction of the Llangollen Canal to Newtown. Originally conceived to transport lime for agricultural land improvement the canal was authorised in 1794 and the first section opened in 1796. But it was to take another 25 years before it was completed. It was eventually taken over by the Shropshire Union Canal but, as with so many canals, both road and rail led to a decline in traffic. A breach in the canal at Frankton in 1936 led the company to seek abandonment which was approved in 1944. This picture is of the long abandoned section near Newtown and shows the Dolfor Lock cottage.
