Houses and heavy industry. The industry is BAE systems and the big grey, black and red hall is the new £130 million Central Yard Complex. This is part of a £300 million upgrade in preparation for the Dreadnought class of nuclear missile submarines (SSBNs) that will replace the current Vanguard class Trident missile boats. I took this view precisely because of the juxtaposition. It took me 59 years to get to Barrow and it's quite possible I won't be back (not because I don't find it fascinating but because there's too much to do).
