The town hall was built in 1735 replacing an earlier toll booth building. Apparently the clock was at one time a notoriously poor time keeper and there were complaints in the 1930s about erratic bus departures from the High Street which depended on which face of the clock the driver took his timing from. In front of the town hall is the market cross erected in 1768 on the site of an earlier cross.
