There has been a pub on the site of the White Lion since the 14th century. The present building was erected in 1904. A hearty blend of late medieval and Baroque features in a typically exuberant Edwardian fashion, it is Grade II listed https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1240653 Having been closed for a number of years it has been acquired for redevelopment by Stockport Council. The intention seems to be that the ground floor will kept for commercial use as a bar or restaurant whilst the upper floors will be converted into residential apartments. Work has now started and the whole building is now encased in scaffolding.
