The centre was purpose built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Construction started in August 1996, and was completed in July 2000. It is jointly owned by Manchester City Council, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University with all facilities available for use by members of the public. Currently in front of the entrance is one of the Bees in the City Image
