The tower was built between 1748 and 1750, designed by Sir John Clerk as a viewpoint (belvedere) and also a dovecot. It has been restored and, after felling the surrounding trees, is a clearly visible local landmark. Compare with Image taken in 2010. In view is the visitors' car park off the A766.
