Highgate West Cemetery opened in 1839 and was an immediate success because of the splendour of its architectural features and the beauty of its landscape. New legislation in the 1850s banning burials in central London made the London Cemetery Company (who had laid out the West Cemetery) confident of even greater success. They purchased 19 acres to create the East Cemetery which opened in 1860. It was laid out to maximise the space for burial and so does not feature the dramatic layout or the imposing buildings of the West Cemetery. Although the main path is neat and tidy it is an enormous job for the Friends of Highgate Cemetery to keep the whole cemetery in the same manner.
