Donald Crowhurst died at sea in the course of a round-the-world solo yacht race in 1968. He sailed from Teignmouth, desperate to win the £5,000 prize to save his failing business but he was ill-prepared and mentally unstable. He falsified his positions while 'hiding' in the South Atlantic, ready to sail back to England the victor. It is thought that he took his own life when he realised that his deception would be discovered. The most recent interpretation of the story is the film 'The Mercy', partly filmed in Teignmouth and released in 2018 with Colin Firth as Crowhurst.
