The mill is now converted to a dwelling. Of particular interest to me are the two pumps on the lawn by the flagpole. The one on the right has been mistaken for a steam engine but I am confident this is a vacuum pump as it came from a sugar works. Sugar is produced by multiple effect evaporation under vacuum and all sugar works need vacuum pumps. This one is by F W Brackett of Colchester - noted for air compressors and vacuum pumps, some steam driven. It has taken me 20 or more years to get round to this - if it had been a steam engine I would have been there within a week or two of hearing about it!
