The Liverpool branch of the RSPCA is the oldest animal welfare society in the world. It began in 1809 as the 'Liverpool Society for Preventing Wanton Cruelty to Brute Animals' to protect animals that worked at the port. Update May 2021: The RSPCA site at Halewood closed down in May 2019 and is now being redeveloped for housing.
