The Newtown WI have 'yarn-bombed' some of the pollarded limes and benches around this small garden at the junction of Short Bridge Street and Gas Street for the centenary of Armistice Day. I believe similar decorations around the Cenotaph were not allowed. A sign on one tree says... A red poppy: Signifies a lasting memorial for those who died in WWI and later conflicts - officially associated with the Royal British Legion. A white poppy: Remembers those who have died in conflict while emphasising the lasting commitment to peace - officially associated with the Peace Pledge Union. A black poppy: Remembering the African, Black and Caribbean communities who contributed in any way to the war effort - officially associated with BlackPoppyRose. A purple poppy: Is worn by those wanting to remember the animal victims of war - officially associated with the Animal Aid Charity.
