John Raining 1659-1722 born in Dumfries left thousands of pounds 'to plant a school in any spot in North Britain', for the teaching of 'the fatherless and other poor children'. Inverness was chosen, and the original Raining's School was on Church Street. In 1757 it moved to a new Raining's School at the top of the stairs, which was later demolished in 1976
