Although there is evidence of a Saxon church on this site, the first written records date from the 12th century. It was extended in the 13th century and a tower, housing six bells, was constructed; unfortunately the tower collapsed in 1804 and the bells were sold to pay for its reconstruction. As with so many English churches there was a major restoration in Victorian times, and in this case further work in 1908 when the upper part of the tower was removed and replaced with the present spire. It stands 135 feet tall.
