The fine arch in the centre was the gatehouse to Tavistock Abbey. Built in the late 12th century with additions in the 15th century, the gatehouse was altered and restored in 1824 when it became Tavistock Library. Listed, grade I, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1105833 On the left of the gatehouse is the Gothic style library and former librarian's house, now occupied by the Tavistock Museum. Built circa 1830 for the sixth Duke of Bedford. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1105845 On the right of the gatehouse is and early/mid 19th century one storey building which has been, among other uses, a weights & measures office and an antiques shop.
