Approaching lock 16 on the towpath. The Union Inn is close to the original junction of the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde. This section of the Union Canal fell into disrepair, was closed and filled in. Flats, including those in the background here, were built over its course. When the Union Canal was reopened a whole new section had to be constructed and the Falkirk Wheel designed to rejoin the Union and the Forth & Clyde canals.
