The Sullom Voe Terminal handles production from oilfields in the North Sea and East Shetland Basin. It is not a refinery and stores oil before it is transported by tanker. The terminal was built between 1975 and 1981; Image] to the south re-opened in 1978 to support the building of the terminal which was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 9 May 1981 (although the site had been receiving oil from the Brent and Ninian pipelines since December 1978).
