The Goddard family were lords of the manor hereabouts and lived in a manor house dating from the 18th century. The house was demolished in 1952 after having been used as accommodation for American troops during the second world war. These steps are among a few artefacts to be found that indicate the site of the house, which is the grassland just beyond the steps.
