This bridge, as can be seen from its construction, post-dates the canal by many years. At one time, both Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne corporations ran trams over the bridge, to be replaced in the 1930s by a joint service of trolleybuses. But all were gone long before the above 1981 photograph. The road is the A662.
