The station opened in 1839 as a temporary terminus for the line from London to Southampton but became a through station a year later. Between 1949-1967 it was known as Winchester City to distinguish it from Winchester Chesil, the city's other station. But when the latter lost its passenger service in 1960 the distinction became unnecessary.
