The original house was constructed for the Crosier family in the 17th century but there have been two additional Redworths on the site prior to the present Hall. Robert Surtees, grandson of the Crosiers, bought Redworth House and turned it into an 18th century mansion known as Redworth Grove. Sadly, following World War II, the Surtees family were faced with large inheritance taxes and were forced to sell their property to Durham County Council. The authorities turned it into a residential school, which remained until 1987, when it was converted into a 17-bedroom hotel and extended to its current size of 143 bedrooms.
