The Old Counter Wall is a raised bank, on a comparatively long straight east-west alignment here, but irregular elsewhere, that is shown on all old large scale Ordnance Survey maps of the area. It seems to have been an early sea defence that ran from Mucking Flats inland then back out to the river again to the east of the original village of East Tilbury. It has been superseded by the current concrete structure that runs along the bank of the river.
