Founded as Spring Hill College for the training of ministers in the Congregational church in 1838, the college transferred to Oxford in 1886 and took the name Mansfield after its three chief benefactors, a brother and two sisters. The new buildings were designed by Basil Champneys who worked on many school buildings and here set out to create a sumptuous contribution to the Oxford collegiate tradition. The college became a permanent private hall in 1955 and full college of Oxford University in 1995.
