Thomas Holgate (senior) pioneered the provision of potable water to the village: http://longprestonwatertrust.org.uk/history.html and the inscription reads: PRESENTED BY THOMAS HOLGATE OF BROOKLANDS IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER A D 1869.
