The Ashby de la Zouch Canal was opened in 1804 to give an outlet for the Leicestershire coalfield. Today it is navigable only as far north as a point near Snarestone, beyond which mining subsidence has forced closure. The canal is notable in having no locks throughout its length, and is a popular but peaceful waterway.
