The George Inn was built around 1480 and was the first such establishment in Great Missenden. It is thought that its purpose was to serve the people who came to visit the Abbey, offering them sustenance and a place to stay. It merits Grade II* Listed Building status and the Historic England website describes it thus:- "Late C15 or early C16, refronted, colourwashed rendering to front wall. Old tile roof, 2 storeys, right hand part with central door, modern leaded casements each side, two 3-light similar windows to first floor. Gable to left over former carriage arch, now blocked in. Part to left rebuilt early 1970s. Interior: of right hand section contains complete medieval hall and parlour wing. Large moulded arch braced collar hall truss visible on first floor, original floor of parlour wing right hand bay, and moulded beams and joists of late C16 or C17 flooring in hall all visible on ground floor. Good C18 wood fireplace on rear wall with dentil cornice and arch headed corner cupboard adjacent." In addition at the rear is a separate Grade II* Listed barn, possibly originally built as a courthouse. From information available online The George Inn appears to have ceased trading as a pub in 2014, and is currently in a very poor state, pending refurbishment by its owners. However there is an active group fighting to preserve and restore the buildings and its website is here https://www.savethegeorge.co.uk/
