All around the commons in north west Surrey are small pockets of houses tucked away in the woods and Water Lane is typical of these. Many of these properties came about by people squatting on the common land and eventually gaining the right to keep living there. In time many of the squatters' houses were rebuilt with more modern dwellings, but a few remain in original form, if much modernised internally.
